Are you servicing your European customers out of the UK? The EU and the United Kingdom have signed a new trade deal which has come into effect on January 1, 2021. This agreement gives companies planning certainty and regulates the the trading of goods and services between the two partners. As the UK is no longer a member of the EU customs union, sales between the UK and the EU are now being treated as import-/export transactions. As a result, this will increase the administrative workload of German companies when importing goods from the UK (and vice versa). Although it is early days, some German companies have already scaled down or even suspended trading with their UK- partners as they perceive the additional paperwork as a burden and unnecessary hurdle. As a consequence their focus has shifted to other markets within the EU.
